This data base lists the descendants of Mathias Spitzmüller (died in Oberschopfheim, Baden, Germany in 1704) and their spouses. With only a few exceptions though, it does not include the descendants of female Spitzmillers, Spitzmuellers, or Spitzmüllers once they marry. There are over 1000 names. It includes both lines that never left Germany and serveral lines (including my own) that immigrated to America. If your ancestors are listed, we're related.
Your ancestry should be included here if, during the early 1900's, your Spitzmiller or Spitzmueller ancestors were located in the following states: Ohio, Colorado, Iowa, Minnesota, or Texas. If they were in Kansas or Brooklyn, New York during the same time period, they may be included.
If you are descended from the Spitzmillers of Buffalo, New York; Iron County, Missouri; Vanderburgh County, Indiana; one line from Brooklyn, New York; New Orleans, Louisiana; Jersey City, New Jersey; Manhatten, New York; Westchester County, New York; or Chicago, Illinois your ancestors will not be included here. These nine lines are related to each other, but not to mine (at least not within the available Catholic church records from the towns of Oberschopfheim or Nordrach in the German state of Baden). All nine lines originated in Nordrach, the Brooklyn line coming to America by way of Appenweier, the New Orleans line by way of Zell am Harmersbach, the Jersey City line by way of Karlsruhe, the Manhatten line by way of Biberach, and the Westchester County line by way of Schramberg and Schweinningen in Württemberg. Return to the Data Base Index to see links to my data bases for Buffalo, NY; Iron County, MO; Vanderburgh County, IN; and one-of several-lines in Brooklyn, NY. The few Spitzmüllers of the New Orleans, Louisiana; Jersey City, New Jersey; Manhatten, New York; Westchester County, New York; and Chicago, Illinois lines (each with only a few generations of male descendants in America) are included in my Spitzmüller Descendants of Nordrach, Baden, Germany data base, also accessible from the above link.
The Spitzmiller or Spitzmueller lines which settled in US states other than those already mentioned have not been tied in yet, one way or the other.
Some descendants of the Spitzmüllers of Oberschopfheim (located in southwest Germany between the Rhine River to the west and the Black Forest to the east-see map for location) spread to other towns in Baden including, but not limited to, Altdorf, Brenden, Buchenbach, Diersburg, Friesenheim, Häg, Häusern (A. Sankt Blasien), Hecklingen, Hofweier, Kehl, Ichenheim, Marlen, Niederschopfheim, Oberhausen, Oberweier, Offenburg, Reichenbach bei Gengenbach, Säckingen, Schienen, Schutterzell, Unteribenthal, Zell-Weierbach, and Zunsweier. Two other lines went to Strasbourg, France and Kroentgeshof, Luxembourg. They are included here also.
A few words about name spelling: For those individuals who never left Germany, I have used the German spelling of both given and surnames including the use of the umlaute (two dots) over certain vowels. For the first generation (and any children that came with them) who immigrated to America, I have tried to show both the original German spelling and any Anglicized version used in America. For example the given name Anton might become Anthony in America and is written as Anton (Anthony). The surname Spitzmüller (the original German spelling) became either Spitzmiller (most common) or Spitzmueller (less common) and is written as Spitzmüller/Spitzmiller or Spitzmüller(Spitzmueller) respectively. For each immigrant I used the version of the name most often adopted by his American descendants, which is not necessarily the version used most often in his own American documents. When using the Name Index for this data base, check all possible spellings. The name Spitzmüller, by the way, means in German 'miller on the point of land (between two valleys)'.
The most recent generation listed for most lines (other than my own) is probably incomplete. If you would care to provide me with information on recent generations in your line, I would be glad to include that information in future updates of this data base. I will not include any information for living individuals other than name and gender.
